What is Dirty Bomb? Find out while watching of brand new gameplay now. You dirty thing.

Splash Damage likes to make a thing of its heritage, and it’s understandable why. From Enemy Territory to the enjoyable bolted on multiplayer for the otherwise forgettable Batman Arkham Origins, the Bromley-based developer has proved again and again that it knows what it’s doing when it comes to the art of people shooting each other in the face.

For many, though, Splash Damage is known for Brink - the sometimes brilliant, often broken Brink, that is. You can see much of that game in Dirty Bomb, the developer’s new game, though while it’s taken on the studio’s heritage it doesn’t seem to have inherited many of the problems of its last big game.

There’s the same bold, colourful art style, pitched in Dirty Bomb as somewhere between the po-faced look of Call of Duty and the more outlandish world of Team Fortress and Borderlands. Dirty Bomb’s more light-hearted than what’s gone before it, and Splash Damage subverts the London setting its gone for by painting drab urban areas such as Tower Hamlets and Canary Wharf with big dashes of colour.

The presentation might have a light touch, but the class-based action has a hard, precision engineered edge to it. Dirty Bomb feels like Splash Damage going back to its roots - all the way back to the days of Enemy Territory - with a multiplayer shooter that makes no compromises, and no concessions to players who may be a little green around the gills.

Splash Damage and Nexon, who are helping make Dirty Bomb, state that this is a PC exclusive with pride - there are no console versions planned, meaning this is reserved for the PC elite. A good thing, too, as Dirty Bomb takes a little more study and a little more concentration than most multiplayer shooters to really see it sing.

Players start by choosing a load out of squad members to take into battle with them, taking their pick from a selection of colourful characters who fluidly blend certain class attributes. There’s Arty, the support mercenary who can paint areas for aerial strikes, Fletcher, the tactician with sticky bombs and a lovely boomstick and Nader, a German assault merc who has a penchant for flinging grenades into the fray.

That’s just a selection of the 12 characters currently available - the choice is overwhelming, though players won’t be wanting for variety. Each has their own special ability, and composing a well balanced team is the first part of the battle. Teamwork is absolutely vital to success in the objective based matches, and planning a well co-ordinated assault or defence is, as with so many of Splash Damage’s games, is Dirty Bomb’s real thrill.

Playing through Stopwatch, one of Dirty Bomb’s three modes, sees all this in action. Chapel is set in a vibrant take on London’s East End, Hawksmoor’s spire at Whitechapel overseeing a map that’s a sublime slice of town planning. Alleyways snake around a central road down which one team must repair and escort a vehicle before proceeding to a courtyard where data packages must be delivered.

The skirmishes that play out as one team goes after its objectives and the other looks to halt them are delicious - little staged battles in streets with choke points emerging through the level’s flow. As a shooter Dirty Bomb is pretty good fun, but layer in its team-play and it becomes something much smarter, and more satisfying to boot.

There’s a catch, though. Dirty Bomb is free-to-play - itself a dirty term these days - although, as publisher Nexon insists, it’s the good kind of free-to-play, along the lines of Dota or Team Fortress rather than more scurrilous recent examples. Loadout cards and loot can be earned in-game as you level up, or can be bought - think along the lines of Battlefield’s Battlepacks, and how they can be purchased or earned.

Balancing all this together is going to be a tough task, and that’s one area of doubt hanging over Dirty Bomb right now. If Splash Damage is up to it, though, there’s every chance that its renewed focus on PC could well make Dirty Bomb a proper return to its hardcore, much-loved roots.
